Decorate your Computer with Vinyl

I love my computers and I love my stamping and scrapbooking stuff! So I decided to put it all together to decorate my new laptop! I had seen skins to order online, but I wanted my decoration to be more personal. So, I thought skins are just vinyl- why not use some of the “Oh My Vinyl” I had ordered from Oh My Crafts . I used a custom frame die that I designed and then had created by Accucut, now CustomShapePros, to cut the vinyl.

But, hmmmmmm, the vinyl was black and so was my laptop. Now, here is where it helps to understand how the inks and materials you use work, as I always tell my stamping class. Alchohol inks by Ranger will stick to non-porous surfaces. So, I whipped out my stash of the metallic mixers and started coloring the vinyl, using  a mixture of silver and gold alchohol ink. Within seconds, it had dried.

I cut a strip of vinyl the length of the laptop, and applied the same metallic inks.  I decided to use an embossing folder, also from  Oh My Crafts , on the strip and then I swiped it with some purple Ranger alchohol ink. It gave the strip a slight color and enhanced the dimension supplied by the embossing.

I was then able to peel the backing off the vinyl and apply the shapes to the laptop covers. But here is where the personal part comes in. Oh My Vinyl seemed to work in a regular punch- at least it worked for me- you might want to skip this step if you are afraid of wrecking you punch. Another alternative is to use a die cut machine or Cricut if you have one. I used a scalloped circle to punch a background, and then a smaller circle to punch out a picture of my daughter. I taped the picture to the vinyl scalloped circle and peeled off the backing of the vinyl and applied that directly over the vinyl frame already on my laptop.

If I want to change the picture I can just remove the small circle and apply a different one. How much fun is that!!

My next attempt will be to order the white “Oh My Vinyl” and stamp it for a different look.
