Hello friends! If you’ve watched\/read my posts before you know that I typically do paper crafting related projects and videos. And you probably know that a lot of times I use things differently than the way they were intended for. This post is actually a jewelry related one, but the premise is the same. I am using an ear wire jig made by Potter USA<\/a>, but I’m not using this tool in the manner for which it was intended.<\/p>\n

The tool is supposed to help make ear wires for your earrings. When I watched the Potter USA video<\/a> on how this was supposed to be used when the tool first came out, my first thought was “I wonder if that could help me make a wire wrap?”<\/p>\n

And it it does! So I’m going to show you how I use it. I mean, you can still use it as an ear wire jig, but I’m going to show you how to use it to make a wire wrap.<\/p>\n

Normally I use 20 gauge wire for pendants. I use 22 for the ear wires and 20 or even sometimes 18, depending on how big and heavy pendant is for wire wraps. In the video, I was using 22 gauge to make it go faster.<\/p>\n

I walk though the steps for making an ear wire, and point out the differences I do in order to set up and make a wire wrap. If all you’re going to use this for is an ear wire, then go watch the video by Potter USA, because it\u2019s a lot better \ud83d\ude42 .<\/p>\n

First thing- in general, when you’re making an ear wire, you’re going to ball up the end. That’s the recommendation. You can still do this when making a wire wrap, but it is a little fussy. Play around with it though if you want different looks.<\/p>\n

I started to write out directions, but it is much easier to watch the video because you will be confused if you’ve never used the ear wire jig, or at least watched the Potter USA video on how to use it. I go through 2 different jigs- number 1<\/a> and number 2<\/a>. The first makes a round loop for hanging the pendant from your necklace, and the second one makes a more angular\/diamond shape that is different, but pretty. I usually do it for both now, but especially as I mentioned for the Number 2 Ear Wire Jig, I hammer the wire as I go along so the following steps have less chance at wrecking the work that I’ve already done.<\/p>\n
