Toss Away 1 Fabulous 1 Final

Toss Away Remedies- Fixing Bad Backgrounds

Hello to my paper crafting friends! I am in the middle of making a video on failures/mistakes I am making during the process of designing for a Jewelry challenge. Along the way I decided to talk about the mistakes I made and how and why I wouldn’t do certain things again. In the process I was mentioning the videos I made trying to rescue some of my toss away paper projects, and then realized I never actually released those!

Originally my plan was to intersperse new content with these Toss Away remedies, but I changed my mind for this bunch. I am just grouping them all together in this post.  I hope to make this an ongoing theme where I start with mistakes or Toss Aways and try to rescue them. I’m calling it my Failure to Fabulous series- ok I know that’s a huge exaggeration, but catchy titles are most definitely not my strong-suit 😁. I plan on releasing videos for both the paper crafting as well as my jewelry experiments. Most times you do not see all the things that go wrong along the way when folks post pictures or videos. And if you are more of a newbie, you may not have the tools or experience to know what to try when you have something go wrong. Hopefully there will be some ideas or even reminders for things to try yourself when you are ready to toss something away that you are struggling with. There may be a point where you are faced with a real Toss Away, but sometimes a Rescue can end up better than the original idea!

In the first two I rescue a couple of different rejects from experiments with Distress Oxide Resists and one with Texture Paste gone bad, haha. For the most part layering different combinations of Distress Oxide Sprays and Distress Spray stains, along with strategically placed embellishments were quick to enable a usable background/card front. In the looooong second video I struggle a lot more with one of the pieces, but in the end Tim Holtz Alloy alcohol ink saves the day!

The third video starts with a warning to make sure your workspace is clean before you place something down on it. In this case, I was started a card with an uncoated, printed background. It was a Photoshop mashup of a few different mixed media projects that I had turned into a repeating pattern and printed for a quick start for cards. The plan originally was to pull some crackle medium over the top and then maybe punch up some areas with color or embellishments, etc. This background was almost ruined by putting it down onto a blotch of orange Spray Stain. I managed to recover it with Tim Holtz Distress Pencils and some Distress Oxide Sprays strategically painted on.

In all of the cases I did manage to salvage the Toss Aways. That doesn’t always happen, but the true Toss Aways can always be used to cut out words or images using die cuts as a last resort 😉

Enjoy!
